The Howard A. Latta Scholarship Fund : FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Because you asked, the following are some FAQs and answers, pertaining to our Class of ’63 Legacy gift.
Because you asked, the following are some FAQs and answers, pertaining to our Class of ’63 Legacy gift.
1. What is this Fund, and why is it important? The Fund was established by the Class of ’68 to grant modest scholarship support to deserving WGHS graduates, to help achieve their goals after graduation. It is named after Howard Latta, our former principal, who firmly believed in continuing education beyond high school: college, vocational, and technical education. It is a private not-for-profit 501c3 organization. It is a separate entity from the WG School District and the WGSD Foundation. The choice of the Latta Fund as the unified Class Legacy Gift from ’63 stems from the fact that we received a quality education at Webster High, coupled with solid community support. It is an obvious vehicle by which we, as an alumni community, can pay it back, and forward.
2. Many of you have inquired: What exactly do Stan Musial, Mother Teresa, Bill Gates and Gandhi have in common? Easy. They all chipped in to their high school class gift projects.
3. Next you ask “how can I emulate them by donating, even if I do not have the resources that Bill Gates has?” NO PROBLEM.
ALL donations, small and large, are appreciated and most welcome.
4. Will my classmates know how much I give? Not unless you tell them. All contributions go directly to the Latta Fund. Occasionally LATTA reports to us the total amount that has been earmarked as received from the Class of ’63. Our REAL GOAL is to have 100% classmate support. Even a small donation IS significant.
5. Is the goal of raising “$63.000” realistic? Emphatically YES.
WGHS ’59 was able to raise over $59,000 (get it?) for the recipients of its class gift! Between the classes of ’58 and ’59 they have raised more than $100,000. However, the Howard A. Latta Fund was NOT a primary recipient of this money. LATTA is a small volunteer-run organization, governed by a citizen board. It could use a big boost of support to benefit many young WGHS grads at a crucial time of life.
6. What methods of giving might work for me?
--Purchasing or donating an item at the10/12/13 Silent Auction,
--Giving stock/securities, or a qualified charitable distribution from an IRA,
--Designating a planned gift in your will,
--Pledging a one-time gift (say at age 70 1/2), or giving in 5-year installments,
--Making memorial donations, tributes for birthdays, retirements, special occasions,
--Writing a check, using your PayPal account, or dropping a buck in the bucket.
